Abstract

The Lower Mississippian Meadville Shale is regarded haere as a paleoecological problem and discussed in terms of the nature of the exposed sediments, the fossils within the sediments and the relationship of the fossils to the sediments. Lithologic descriptions and treatment of sedimentary structures is presented. The condition of the fossil material, the composition of the fauna, the distribution of species, and numbers of species are discussed qualitatively. The balance of the fauna is presented through a discussion of the taxonomic groups represented. A qualitative analysis of a particular sample from the Meadville is presented to give more precise representation of various attributes of the assemblage and as an example of the adaption of neoecological techniques to paleoecology.
