Abstract
This paper investigates the role of tertiary education on the educational policy decisions of Brazilian mayors. Using a close election regression discontinuity design, I identify the effect of electing a college educated mayor on a battery of educational outcomes. In contrast to assumptions made in much of the literature, I find that municipalities that elect college-educated mayors do not have better educational outcomes than municipalities that elect mayors without a college education.
