All We Have Standing Between Us: 250 Years of American Jews and Democracy, Episode 2 (podcast)
Abstract
This episode, featuring historians Adam Mendelsohn and Shari Rabin, explores the pre-Civil War era, including the rise of the Know Nothing Party and the terror of Bleeding Kansas, and chronicles the triumphs and the failures of the Reconstruction period in the aftermath of the war. Listeners will hear more about American Jewish figures including “Brains of the Confederacy” Judah P. Benjamin, philanthropist and nurse Rosanna Osterman, and Know Nothing Party leader Lewis Levin. Also contains archival audio of Henry Fond reading the Gettysburg Address, which originally aired on the Ed Sullivan Show.
